The first miraculous sign performed by the Lord Jesus happened...

This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum, he, his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, and they did not stay there many days.
John 2:11.12.

The first miraculous sign performed by the Lord Jesus happened at a wedding in Cana. He turned water into wine. It was a matter of six large vessels containing an average of some 22 gallons each, and the wine was of the best quality! Through this sign Jesus manifested His glory as the Son of God, the promised Redeemer (ch. 1:14; 20:30.31).

As wine is an illustration of joy in the Bible, this first sign given by the Lord Jesus shows that the joy that He wishes to grant us also exceeds all other, being based on Himself and His redemptive work. Nothing and no-one can dispute our right to this joy, in whatever circumstances we may be at any time of our life.

Afterwards Jesus went on to Capernaum, a fishing village on the northern bank of the Lake of Gennesaret that is often mentioned in the gospels. There they stayed not many days, as the annual Passover feast that the Jews celebrated in Jerusalem was about to take place. As true Man the Son of God readily obeyed what the law prescribed.

The Passover Lamb and the sacrifices of the Old Testament speak symbolically of liberation from Satan's power and the forgiveness of sins. All these rites are prophetic indications that Jesus Christ would bring about redemption through His atoning death on the cross. Through these rites Jesus therefore clearly envisaged Himself being the One who would bring us salvation through bitter suffering. What must He have felt at the thought? Yet He continued on that pathway to the cross in order to save us.

Today's reading: Ezra 4:1-16 · Proverbs 5:1-14

DIVINE CHAMPION 2

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
