A budding policeman

There is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Hebrews 4:13.

A budding policeman
Jamie was a young Canadian boy living in Ottawa in the eighties. One day he went shopping with his mother to buy what he longed for: a siren for his tricycle imitating that of the police. On the way home Jamie tried out his siren. The strident sound startled a man coming towards him, who stopped terrified, then ran off after throwing away the bag he was carrying. Jewels scattered over the pavement.

Jamie's mother picked them up and called the police. The jewels were those from a recent burglary. The young lad had prevented the thief from selling the jewels. The policemen congratulated him: he had become their youngest assistant.

It often happens that people break laws or do wrong without being found out during their life. But the Bible teaches us that God sees all that we do, and even all that we think. Everything is recorded in His book which will one day be opened, so that each one can be judged for what is written there. God is just; a single wrong deed suffices to banish us from Him: we deserve death, for who can claim never to have sinned?

The Bible explains that God has found a wonderful way to reconcile His perfect justice with His goodness: Jesus Christ, who undertook to bear the punishment of the sins of whoever believes in Him. To know more of the merciful way God has opened up for us to be reconciled to him and the wonderful consequences of His grace, read the Bible, particularly the New Testament.

Today's reading: Ezra 7:1-18 · Proverbs 7:1-27
