It sounded as though the young lady was reciting...

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12.

It sounded as though the young lady was reciting the recipe for a cake: she believed in some of the Sermon on the Mount, and in some words from the Koran, and also in reincarnation. That summed up her individual faith. She said she had an easy conscience and gave us the impression that she was content.

Is being content with our own thought-out faith sufficient? Isn't it more important what God thinks of it? Can such a mixture give security in sickness and death? Such wishful thinking must lead us astray! It does not correspond to biblical teaching. We must remember that God has revealed Himself, showing who He is and how we must approach Him. Jesus Christ said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). Jesus is the Name, "by which we must be saved". There is no other way!

Have you possibly put your own faith together yourself and are satisfied with it? If you had to repair the roof of your home, would you trust scaffolding that you had made yourself from a variety of materials and not fixed firmly? We need security! So let us not rely on our own "creed" in the most important question of all: How do I stand regarding God and life after death?

We cannot "tailor" the Word of God to suit ourselves. It places us in God's light, but it also shows us the way to life. We have to accept, believe and obey what it says. That alone gives the security we need.

Today's reading: Amos 1:1-15 · Proverbs 22:9-16

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
