I am (2)

I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live for ever.
John 6:35.51.

I am (2)
Bread is proverbially the staff of life. In the figurative sense in which the Lord Jesus compares Himself with bread, He is more than a mere support. He is life itself. Having once tasted of Him, one never experiences hunger again. That does not simply mean that any appetite for other things, such as various forms of entertainment, is overcome. Hunger is satisfied once for all time, for this inexhaustible form of nourishment contains life instead of merely supporting it like our daily bread.

In vv. 49 & 50 the Lord Jesus contrasts Himself as the Bread of Life with the manna provided by God for the fathers of the Israelites to eat in the wilderness. They died, but the Bread of Life affords everlasting life. That does not preclude the possibility of physical death, but means rather that the soul and the spirit are delivered from the power of death to be united with the body of glory at the resurrection.

If our readers, not having taken any spiritual food, sense a feeling of emptiness in their souls, we should heartily recommend eating of the Bread of Life! Receive the Lord Jesus into your heart. He will satisfy your hunger.

Eternal life, however, can only be obtained by faith in Christ's finished work, and certainly not by any activity involving ourselves. This passage of Scripture does not refer to participation in the Last Supper, or the communion service. We feel it necessary to point out the error of this commonly held belief.

(to be continued next Monday)

Today's reading: Genesis 24:1-14 · Psalms 7:1-8

However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
