I am (5)

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; and I know my sheep, and am known by my own.
John 10:11.14.

I am (5)
What love there must have been in the heart of the Lord Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life for His sheep! David, Israel's great king, had, as a boy, chased after a lion and a bear to snatch a lamb from their jaws, but that is a poor illustration of the love and devotion of the Saviour for the sheep of His flock, for through God's preservation David managed to kill both the lion and the bear and escape with his life. To deliver penitent sinners from the power of Satan the Lord Jesus had to lay down His life. That was the sacrifice demanded by our holy God, and His demand was met voluntarily by His Son.

Dear reader, can you conceive that you are so precious to the Son of God that He was prepared to die for you, so that you might escape eternal death, the punishment for sin? What is holding you back from surrendering to Him?

In your earthly life you will never come across such an intimate relationship as exists between the Lord Jesus and His own. The second part of our verse for today, in which the Lord presents Himself as the Good Shepherd, tells us as much. In spite of the enormous number of disciples who have confessed Him as Lord over the centuries, not one of their names is forgotten (v. 3). That fact alone should convince us of His love, but it goes much further. He knows all about our circumstances, so that we can entrust ourselves unreservedly to His care: He is truly a Good Shepherd!

(to be continued on Monday, 13th June)

Today's reading: Genesis 35:1-29 · Psalms 21:1-13
