I am (6)

I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?
John 11:25.26.

I am (6)
It must have been overpowering for Martha to be confronted with a statement by the Lord Jesus so rich in meaning only a short time after her brother's death. Martha believed in the resurrection; however, for her it was an event of the future, due to take place at the end of the age. Seeing the resurrection personified before her was something she could not grasp. But her faith came to her aid, for she answered the Lord's question, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world." She acknowledged the dignity of His Person and His omnipotence, and that was sufficient. She was able to accept the Lord's pronouncement without attempting to fathom it.

Lazarus was raised from the dead, for the Lord has power over life and death. Not much later Christ rose from the dead Himself. What a comfort for mortal man! Faith in His Person and work bring him into a relationship with God that surpasses the bounds of our earthly life, because Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

We mourn when death separates us from one of our loved ones, but there is a word of divine consolation for us: believers will live, even if they have fallen asleep in Jesus, for God will bring them with the Lord when He returns for His own (1 Thessalonians 4:16). But the Lord added a further truth to this promise: believers who are alive possess eternal life. Have you claimed this truth for yourself? Could Martha's response have been your own declaration of faith?

(to be continued next Monday)

Today's reading: Genesis 43:16-34 · Psalms 31:1-9

One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liarsThis testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
