The screen

You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; o LORD, my God, I will give thanks to you for ever.
Psalm 30:11.12.

The screen
A man who had had a serious accident lay in his hospital bed. There he had plenty of time to consider things. As the prospects of healing were uncertain, he also thought about death.

One day a nurse suddenly put a screen round his bed. The man understood what that meant for him: he had little time left to live.

On the wall opposite his bed hung a text from the Bible: "Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). The man's glance turned from the verse to the screen and vice-versa. Come to Jesus! Wasn't it too late for him? Until now he had been so indifferent towards God. But now time was pressing. He exclaimed loudly, "Jesus, I'm coming to you!" - !"Poor fellow!" thought the patient in the next bed, "He's going mad."

The Lord heard that troubled cry, and stirred the man's memory: he remembered Bible verses heard in his younger days. "The one who comes to me I will by no means cast out." "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live." (John 6:37; 11:25). The message of salvation penetrated his troubled soul, and the seed took root. He found peace.

Later the nurse re-entered the room. "Do please excuse me. I came to the wrong room." And she removed the screen. "Nurse, your mistake brought me salvation." The man regained his health and led a happy life following the Lord Jesus.

Today's reading: Genesis 45:16-28 · Psalms 32:6-11

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
