August 12, 2015 Today's reading: Isaiah ch. 48 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; Matthew 27:51 The veil of the temple that separated the holy place from the holiest of all tore the moment when the Lord Jesus accomplished His work on the cross. The three hours of darkness, in which the Lord bore the judgement of God for us, had passed, and with a loud cry He gave His Spirit into His Father's hands. The tearing of the veil from top to bottom was God's first response after His silence during the hours of judgement. Even if "the earth quaked and the rocks were split", the torn veil presents a testimony of permanent significance. God is able to evaluate the death of Christ perfectly, and now He invites all believers to enter His presence and contemplate the extent of that work. Our ability to comprehend it is indeed limited. But that is not what occupies the worshipper but the perfection of the sacrifice and the consciousness of being in God's presence. The curtain in God's holy place consisted of blue, purple and scarlet thread and fine woven linen which set forth various aspects of the glory of the Lord Jesus as a Man. No lesser Person than He had to yield His life in order to open up the way into the holy place through His blood "by a new and living way which he consecrated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh" . Sin had separated us from God but the death of the holy and just One gave us access into the holy place. How great this is! Do we all avail ourselves of the possibility to worship that it affords us? |
