Many peace pacts have been concluded between nations since...

There are many plans in a man's heart, nevertheless the LORD's counsel - that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21.

Many peace pacts have been concluded between nations since the end of the Second World War. In the mean time peace has prevailed in Western Europe for over seventy years. For this we can be truly thankful. However, the Bible predicts that in the not too distant future a massive economic and political crisis will arise in Europe. Governments will then hand over power to a single man - and it will not be for their peace and blessing!

"God has put it into their hearts to fulfil his purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom (i.e. their right to rule) to the beast (i.e. the future ruler), until the words of God are fulfilled" (Revelation 17:17).

People will make a supposedly genial plan, yet only carry out what God has announced long before.

Whatever form of government we live under, the Bible says, "There is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God" (Romans 13:1). Some rule well, some less well, and it can happen that God appoints "the lowest of men" as the ruler (cf. Daniel 14:17).

"Man proposes, God disposes." In view of political events in the world Christians can therefore remain calm. They must personally obey God rather than man; they need not offer resistance or rebel, but should pray for "kings and all who are in authority" (cf. Acts 4:19.20; 5:29; 1 Timothy 1:1.2). God has everything under control; His counsel will come to pass!

Today's reading: Daniel 4:13-27 · Psalms 40:10-17
