True faith

Faith is the substantiating of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 (J.N.D.).

True faith
Today's verse from the Bible has less to do with saving faith than the effective faith in a Christian's everyday life. It describes two salient characteristics of faith:

"Faith is the substantiating of things hoped for". As Christians we have a sure hope. The Lord Jesus will return to take us into our heavenly home. This glorious future, of which the Bible assures us, has an effect on our daily life, if it is already a reality for us through faith. Instead of being taken up with everyday life and all that pertains to it, we look forward to the coming of our Lord. Instead of living for our professional work and leisure time, we anticipate what it will be like when we are in heaven and apply ourselves to things that have eternal value.
"Faith is the conviction of things not seen." We cannot see God. However, by faith we are convinced that He exists precisely as He has revealed Himself in His Word. Because we believe in Him, we are subject to His authority and are ready and willing to obey Him. Because we trust His omnipotence and goodness, we pray to Him, believing that He can help us through all life's difficulties.
In this way things that are future and invisible have their effect on our everyday life through our faith.

Today's reading: Daniel 4:28-37 · Psalms 41:1-9

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
