Did you say “sin”?

Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Psalm 51:4; 1 John 1:9.

Did you say "sin"?
When we hear what people say, we must conclude that there are many different ideas regarding the concept of sin. One says that sin is an idea of yesteryear, a medieval concept that the church used to instil fear in believers and keep them in its grip.

Another might suggest that offences worthy of imprisonment are sin, like murder, kidnapping, violence, theft, but such things are not his problem.

A third person's opinion is that we are less strict today than formerly: we aren't so narrow-minded regarding morality. There used to be a lot of hypocrisy.

What individuals understand by sin is, however, not what counts. What God thinks of it, and what the Bible states on the subject are decisive. Any offence against God's holy principles is sin. He overlooks nothing, but He can forgive, because Jesus Christ died a sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary.

Whom does God forgive? The better and less guilty class of people, as some think? Not at all, but those who turn to God and confess their sins to Him, as the Bible says. This means that we must name them and admit that we have transgressed His standard of good and bad. The grace that God exercises is valid for everyone who believes on Jesus Christ and acknowledges Him as his or her Saviour.

Today's reading: Daniel 11:10-28 · Acts 4:13-22

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
