Thoughts on the Gospel of John (53)

You judge according to the flesh; I judge no-one. And yet if I do judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. I am one who bears witness of myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness of me.
John 8:15-18.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (53)
The Pharisees revealed their self-assurance: having expressed their judgment on the guilty adulteress, they then passed judgment on the Son of God. How stubborn they were! On the one hand they judged by appearances (cf. John 7:24), then they deliberately ignored the undeniable signs that confirmed Jesus as the promised Messiah. The Lord, by contrast, refused to take up the position of a judge and condemn people. That He will be on a future occasion, but not while on earth, when He was there to bring love and light to the world.

The world is governed by evil. When the day of grace has passed, God will judge it "in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained", Jesus Christ (Acts 17:31). The proof has been given: Christ was raised from the dead.

Judgment that has been given to the Son of man will correspond to the truth, as God sees things. On this point the Son of God is in full agreement with His heavenly Father.

Even the Mosaic law, to which the Lord's opponents appealed, demanded that any issue had to be confirmed by a twofold witness. If the testimony of two people had to be accepted as true according to that law, how much more trustworthy was the testimony of God the Father and the Son.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Job 16:1-22 · Acts 10:17-33

One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liarsThis testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
