A God who grants blessing

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3.

A God who grants blessing
In the epistle to the Ephesians God gives us a glimpse of His own heart. We learn that all things flow from Him. He is the source and giver of all blessings. In these early verses there is no mention of sinners or sin. The subject is God's eternal plan of blessing, which, irrespective of the fact that man became a sinner, motivated His heart to grant people in Christ infinitely rich blessings (vv. 4-5). That those whom He wished to bless needed redemption through the blood is true, but that is dealt with later (v. 7). In contrast to the epistle to the Romans, which begins with man's lost state, in Ephesians 1 God's heart, His eternal counsel for Himself, His Son and the elect stand in the forefront.

God has not withheld any spiritual blessing from those whom He had in view before the foundation of the world. Could anyone therefore doubt His love? Let us repeat: God has held nothing back from His children. And by faith they can now already rejoice over all that they will one day enjoy with Him perfectly in His presence. They are the "heavenly" (1 Corinthians 15:48), who "sit together in the heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 2:6), even though they must still live on earth for a time. They have, here and now, the enjoyment corresponding to a place in heaven.

When we are occupied with the Word of God, particularly with the consequences of Christ's death, resurrection and ascension, our hearts are transported to heaven.

"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21).

Today's reading: Isaiah 17:1-18:7 · Acts 26:1-18

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
