The Deity of Jesus Christ (3)

All things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things consist.
Colossians 1:16.17.

The Deity of Jesus Christ (3)
Jesus is called God by the apostles. In Romans 9:5 Paul declares that He is "over all, the eternally blessed God," and in Titus 2:13: "our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ". Warning us to guard against idols, the apostle John proclaims by contrast: "This is the true God and eternal life" (1 John 5:20).

Jesus will eventually reign over all as God. Already in Psalm 8 the greatness of creation is contrasted with the weakness of the first man. Then, immediately, the greatness of the second Man (Christ) is introduced, under whose feet all will be placed. Today's verse confirms that "all things were created through him" and "in him all things consist". So without His intervention matter could never have existed, for it is God's prerogative to create from nothing. Similarly, without His permanent support the physical world in which we live would return to the chaos from which it came.

In the book of Revelation the apostle John sees the Lord as the ‘Root of David", i.e. the One who existed before David and who alone is worthy to open the book of divine judgments that are to come upon the earth. Before such majesty the body of believers sing the new song, while thousands of angels proclaim seven characteristics of His excellence, and all creatures and all things proclaim His glory for ever and ever. The day will come when every knee will truly bend before Him (Philippians 2:10). Oh, that we could do so willingly and joyfully from today!

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
