Your money or your life!

What profit is it to a man, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD.

Matthew 16:26; Ezekiel 7:19.

Your money or your life!
Someone once wrote that everyone given the choice of emptying their money-box or being killed preferred abandoning their wealth and saving their life. Everybody's most precious treasure is definitely his life. But there is the life of the body and also that of the soul, and God draws our attention to a crucial choice: is our soul lost or saved? Our eternal future depends on the answer.

On this subject one might fear that many make the wrong choice. Under the title, "A country lad who succeeded", a newspaper obtained the remarks of a 60-year-old man who migrated to America where he made his fortune. He stated: "My success is exclusively financial." What he meant exactly we do not know, but the question is: did his wallet overflow, while his heart was empty? Did his business occupy him at the expense of everything else? Did he bother to think of his soul and his relationship to God his Creator?

Today's verses show us the importance of making the right choice. Amassing a fortune? To what end? Whatever the use may be, it is not a guarantee for our future on earth, and even less a passport to heaven. When we have to appear before God, our money will be insignificant; for Him it is not legal tender.

Let us not pass the essential by, but choose the eternal life that God offers through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.

Today's reading: Isaiah 30:1-33 · Hebrews 2:1-4

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
