Why do you not understand my speech? Because you are not able to listen to my word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe me.

Is your experience similar to that of Jesus' listeners? You read the Bible, the Word of God, without understanding what it is saying to you. The reason is not that the Bible is in another language, or belongs to another culture or was written in another age. The basic problem is, as with Jesus' contemporaries, the wavelength is wrong.

We cannot grasp the Word of God merely with our intellect, we must believe it in our heart. Our will must resolve to be prepared to allow the Word of God to speak to our conscience. Whoever obstructs this requirement will sooner or later develop feelings and thoughts directed against God and His Son Jesus Christ.

Many believe that there is freedom of thought in every respect. That is not true. Whoever refuses to accept God's truth, as preached and lived out by Jesus, is under the devil's influence. This murderer has always targeted God's creatures: since the Garden of Eden he has endeavoured to hunt them down and blind them with lies.

There is no variable in truth; it is a solid unit. It shows how God judges things. Let us not give way to untruth, however attractive it may appear.
