How to follow Jesus

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.

He who says he abides in him (Jesus) ought himself also to walk as he walked.

Titus 3:5; 1 John 2:6.

How to follow Jesus
Someone stated in astonishment: "Jesus brought a message of hope and peace. I don't understand why no-one applies it." More than 2,000 years after His coming to earth people still speak of the sound teaching that Jesus gave us. Certain sayings of His are powerful and attractive: "Love one another, as I have loved you" (John 13:34). "Love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return" (Luke 6:35). One immediately recognises that putting this into practice would radically change social life and bring peace and kindness to mankind. So why don't we carry it out?

Simply because, left to themselves, human beings are unable to do so; their nature characterised by sin prevents them. The proof came when Jesus, the Messenger of love and peace, was rejected and put to death. "They have rewarded me evil for good and hatred for my love" (Psalm 109:5). The Bible adds that people in their natural state are "foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another" (Titus 3:3).

But God does not stop at this sad assessment. He gives us the remedy. Faith in Jesus Christ and the efficacy of His blood, His life given at the cross, frees us of our guilt. Additionally, God gives the believer a new nature, capable of loving as He does. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Today's reading: Isaiah 54:1-17 · Hebrews 13:1-7

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

As a bona fide member of the Kingdom of God, you must be a proof of His power to save. Matthew 1:21 says Jesus shall save His people from sin.

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
