Today's reading: Psalm 77

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Psalm 90:12

It was a normal weekday morning: the motorway was full and the traffic made slow progress. He was used to the situation through his daily journey to work. Then everything came to a standstill, as it so often did. This morning he would again reach the office later than planned.
While his thoughts were considering the day's tasks, it happened. A lorry crashed into his vehicle. His car was crushed between two lorries. Now there was no more appointments or duties for him: his life had come to an abrupt end.
We are still alive. Maybe we do not entertain the possibility of death at our age. The driver of that car was only fifty. Where is he now? Where would you be, if it happened to be you today?
Who sets off on a long journey without first making the necessary preparations? When it is a matter of our eternal destination, however, we are all often too negligent, although it is imperative and vital.
"Numbering our days" does not mean spending every day in fearful expectation of the end of our life. Whoever realises how short our earthly life is will be wise enough to heed God's call in time. "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts" (Hebrews 3:7-8).
Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth. On the cross of Calvary, he bore for sinners the punishment of our holy and righteous God. He thus became the way to God that has been available for everyone since. But this pathway must be taken now during one's lifetime. "Now, therefore, says the LORD, turn to me with all your heart" (Joel 2:12).

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

There is a nature that is of the Earth and there is a nature that is of Heaven. Since the fall of man, the earthly nature of man has become corrupted and therefore is greatly under the influence of the kingdom of Satan. Characteristic features of this nature are: wickedness, moral perversion - sodomy and all sorts of...More
