God’s righteousness is our subject today...

When King David came to Bahurim, a man whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera, came out, cursing continuously as he came. And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David.
2 Samuel 16:5.6.

God's righteousness is our subject today. With the world full of injustice nowadays, most people no longer believe in such a thing, since God does not react. The Bible explains: not yet! An instance in the life of David, the king of ancient Israel, makes this clear.

Simei was an Israelite from the tribe of Benjamin. He had insulted the king grievously and rebelled against his authority. But David did not wish to avenge himself, having himself experienced God's grace and forgiveness.

When Solomon succeeded his father David on the throne, Simei's offence had still not been punished. Simei had apparently subjected himself to the king, but his rebellious attitude had not changed.

King Solomon is well known for his wisdom. In this case he suspended sentence, placing Simei's fate in his own hands.

Today God acts similarly with each one of us. He makes our future dependent on our decision for or against Jesus Christ. The condition for Simei's probation was: he should not cross the boundary of the city; otherwise he was threatened with the death sentence. Things took their course: through a trifling incident Simei disregarded the condition, and justice followed.

In our time all are guilty before God, whether they ignore Him or despise Him. But God is patient. He does not want people to be lost eternally. He leaves the decision to each individual concerning the acceptance of His offer of grace in Jesus Christ by faith.

Today's reading: Isaiah 49:1-13 · Hebrews 11:1-7

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
