Today's reading: Psalm 78:55-72

Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it. And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he divided their land to them by lot. And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.
Acts 13:16-21

Thoughts on the Book of Acts (107)
In Antioch in Phrygia, Paul was given the opportunity to preach in the synagogue. His purpose was to announce something that was new to them, the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Saviour.
To prepare them for this new message, Paul began with what both the Jews and the proselytes among his hearers already knew. He mentioned how God chose the nation of Israel as a people for a possession, freeing them from the bondage of Egypt and leading them through the wilderness to the promised land. He spoke of the judges who ruled over the nation after the death of Moses and Joshua. In this way, Paul focussed on God's goodness and care for the well-being of His people.
Then Israel became discontent with God's government through judges and prophets; they wanted a king to rule over them like all the other nations. For God, that was an affront. They disregarded His goodness and wisdom. But God bore it patiently and gave them Saul for a king.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
