September 8, 2015 Today's reading: Psalm 80 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 A baker had obtained a post in a village bakery. When he was delivering in the district, one customer asked him how he liked his new boss. "Oh, he's alright," he answered, "only he swears too much." - "Oh, then I suppose you are religious and will get to heaven," said the woman. "Of that I am sure," he replied. - "How do you know?" - "Because I am a protestant," was his answer. To his surprise, the woman disagreed with him. "With such a reason, protestants are no more likely to get to heaven than Catholics or whatever their denomination is. I have not read anything like that in my Bible. Do you know who has access to heaven? Only those who have seen that they are sinners, have confessed the fact before God and accepted Jesus as their Saviour by faith." The conversation embarrassed the baker; so he hurriedly took his leave with the excuse that he had to go to many other customers. Years later, a man entered a cycle shop to have a repair done. When the dealer heard that he came from the village referred to above, he inquired after a certain woman to whom he had previously delivered bread. "She's my wife," he said with a smile. When the dealer had recovered from his astonishment, he said, "Then please tell her that her former baker will go to heaven - not because he is a protestant but because he came to Christ as a lost sinner and accepted Him as his Saviour." |
