Perilous unawareness

God has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness.

Prepare to meet your God.

Acts 17:30.31; Amos 4:12.

Perilous unawareness
We are travelling at quite a speed. Ahead of us a car has several cycles on its roof, but they have not been securely fixed. Our children are quite amused. Suddenly one of the cycles breaks free, overturns and crashes on to the road causing sparks to fly. A scream, a quick turn of the steering-wheel, and we pass the scene of the mishap safe and sound. Behind us, unfortunately, we hear screeching brakes, then a crash; there has been a collision.

After stopping and ascertaining that the damage is only material, we set off again. Dead silence reigns in our car. The children remain silent, now realising what danger lurks on the road. It was always so, without increasing, but they are now aware of it. Their attitude has changed.

Isn't it the same in a spiritual sphere? Many go quietly along their way, not because they feel secure, but because they are unaware of the danger ahead - the danger of having to incur God's judgment and condemnation. This is a solemn reality. We must face the fact and rightly fear the moment when it comes.

There is, however, another thing that we should know: God's love towards all. It is deep, abundant and able to respond to all the misery of mankind. In His love He promises forgiveness and grace to whoever puts his trust in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross.

Today's reading: Zechariah 3:1-10 · Mark 12:28-34

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
