Thoughts on the Gospel of John (72)

His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that he was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, He is of age; ask him. So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, Give God the glory! We know that this man is a sinner. He answered and said, Whether he is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.
John 9:22-25.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (72)
The blind man's parents feared the religious leaders and referred them back to their son for further interrogation: "He is of age: ask him!" What a remarkable similarity to the representatives of professing Christians in our days! They simply bow to the prevailing opinion of unbelievers or higher critics, instead of studying the Bible. Whoever reveres God and His Word will not be intimidated by human beings and their threats, if it is a question of the truth.

The healed man was to give God the glory and agree with the Pharisees that the person who had performed the healing was a sinner. But the man avoided this subtle catch question by simply repeating the one point that for him was absolutely certain. Unable to debate on a subject outside his competence to judge, the healed man made his point and left it at that.

What do we learn from that man? When we know that God has performed a work on us, making a "new man" of us, we should courageously testify it accordingly, even if we are inferior to many a critic of the Bible in intelligence or education.

(to be continued on the 8th January)

Today's reading: Zechariah 5:1-11 · Mark 13:1-13

CONDESCEND!

After seeing their plight, hearing their cries and feeling their pains, God came down to rescue the Israelites from Egypt. Our God is a mobile God. He comes down to deliver His own. As high as God is and even though He has His throne in Heaven, yet He condescends to meet the needs of His children on earth (Isaiah...More

DIVINE CHAMPION 2

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More

EX-CHAMPION?

Although it is an unpleasant experience to be a defeated contender, becoming an ex-champion is a much more grievous experience. When you are not yet a champion, only a few people pay attention to you. But by the time you become a champion, you will be on the radar of many people, including your enemies. A champion has...More
