An altar, a tent and a well

He (Isaac) built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well.
Genesis 26:25.

An altar, a tent and a well
In Beersheba Isaac received a personal message from God that strengthened the patriarch's life of faith (v. 24). What he then undertook in Beersheba we can apply spiritually for ourselves.

Isaac built an altar and called upon the name of the LORD. The altar speaks of the basis of our fellowship with God. Because Jesus Christ died on the cross, we have, as the redeemed, free access to God. Through prayer we keep contact with Him. In doing so, we not only tell Him our worries, but express our rejoicing over the communion that we enjoy.

Isaac pitched his tent there. The tent shows that we are only temporarily, not permanently, here on earth. We live here as strangers who are on their way to their heavenly home. It is the attraction of the Person of the glorified Christ there that encourages us on our earthly pathway. The more we are occupied with Him, the more our hearts will be free from the things of earth.

There Isaac's servants dug a well. The well is an image of the Word of God that refreshes and stimulates our faith. Profitable study of the Bible demands spiritual energy. We need to devote time to "digging" in the Word of God in order to derive the blessing from it. Let us remember: the most precious thoughts that God brings before us are not always on the surface.

Today's reading: Zechariah 8:1-23 · Mark 14:1-11

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
