The Redeemer Jesus Christ

In him (Jesus Christ) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.
Ephesians 1:7.

The Redeemer Jesus Christ
The Bay of Rio de Janeiro is a magnificent, picturesque site. The city of more than six million inhabitants is dominated by the gigantic statue of The Redeemer Christ. Almost 125 feet high, it has become the emblem of the city. Like the crosses erected at road junctions in parts of the country, it is part of the countryside. Among the inhabitants of the city who cast a glance at it, or the thousands of people who view the monument every year, we wonder who knows why the title "Redeemer" is associated with that of "Christ".

The word "redeemer" means "one who buys back". The biblical account explains why it applies to Christ. Jesus, the Son of God, took our nature upon Himself. God had announced, chosen and sent Him to care for mankind and bless him. He lived on earth without sinning. He did good, partaking of our sufferings with compassion. And how did His life of devotion end? With His crucifixion.

The apostle Peter recalled after Christ's resurrection: "God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ" (Acts 2:36). On the cross Jesus underwent the judgment of our sins on God's behalf. He paid our ransom and uttered that word of infinite worth: "It is finished" (John 19:30). Whoever believes in this ransom paid by Christ has been "bought back", i.e. freed. Is the message of Christ the Redeemer and His cross senseless in your opinion? It is, nevertheless, still today "the power of God" who enlightens and delivers whoever receives Him (1 Corinthians 1:18).

Today's reading: Zechariah 7:1-14 · Mark 13:28-37

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
