The days and years of our life

We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Today, if you will hear his (God's) voice, do not harden your hearts.

2 Corinthians 4:18; Hebrews 4:7.

The days and years of our life
Solomon, the king reputed for his wisdom and intelligence was also exceedingly rich (2 Chronicles 9:22.23). Yet all his experience led to one final conclusion that might surprise us: "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity" (Ecclesiastes 1:2). This expression correctly characterises all that is on earth in contrast to all that is of God and heaven. Down here futility reigns.

This breath, this vapour that is our life, appears for a time, then vanishes (James 4:14) when God so decides, for our life is in His hands (Psalm 31:15). Before old age sets in with all its inconveniences (loneliness, physical weakness, forgetfulness, lack of concentration), God wishes to draw our attention to eternal matters, so that passing things recede in importance. In a psalm by Moses He gives us a résumé of human life: "the days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away" (Psalm 90:10). After stating this fact, Moses asks God to "teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (v. 12). Let us each one today count the number of days He has granted us so far. Whatever the number, we do not know how many are still to come. Today is the appropriate day to believe His Word and live the life given by God as a result.

Today's reading: Malachi 3:13-4:6 · Mark 16:12-20

IS YOUR VISA READY?

Speaking of aspirations and ambitions in life, if all you can achieve on earth is for your name to enter and remain in the most important book in the universe - the Book of Life, it is worth it. On the Day of Judgment, many whose names were in earth's halls of fame will be shown the way to the eternal lake of fire...More

BE STRONG

You don't charge someone to be strong if there is no task to be performed or if pressure is not required, either for motion or putting up resistance against an opposing force. In the physical realm, mere movement requires strength. This explains why a sick person or a person just recovering from an ailment finds it...More

Acts 5:4-5

God often proves to be other than people think. Here, for example, death struck a man suddenly for lying before God. Is God therefore severe, when he makes use of His power unreservedly towards the weak?
Let us first briefly examine what preceded this judgment. Holy zeal for the...More
