Thoughts on the Gospel of John (73)

Then they said to him again, What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes? He answered them, I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples? Then they reviled him and said, You are his disciple, but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where he is from. The man answered and said to them, Why, this is a marvellous thing, that you do not know where he is from; yet he has opened my eyes!
John 9:26-30.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (73)
The outraged leaders of Israel refused to give up. Since they could not deny that the blind man had been given his sight, they sought a fault in the procedure. In their opinion they had found one: the healing had taken place on the Sabbath Day. It was no longer a matter of "what", but of "when and how". The one healed, however, sensed that they were insincere and merely wanted to attack him. He replied firmly and also ironically: "Do you also want to become his disciples?"

The leaders then abused him indignantly. Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount are thus fulfilled: "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake" (Matthew 5:11).

The one healed would hear no evil of Jesus, his benefactor. The argument ended in his favour. The accusers withdrew, referring to Moses and rejecting Jesus, the Son of God.

Whoever refuses to believe and follow Jesus will never accept who He is and where He came from.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Exodus 5:15-6:8 · Luke 2:8-20

What shall the baptized for the dead do if ...

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
