Relationships: Commitment

‘Two are better than one if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.'
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV

We can sometimes be quite bad at commitment. We get bored of our job, so we look for a new one. We're struggling at our church so we just decide to leave. And when things get serious in our relationships, we can find ourselves running a mile rather than committing ourselves to that person. The biggest commitment is marriage, but even when we're dating someone we need to be committed and loyal to them. When we're committed to someone, we say that we'll be there for them, even when times get tough. The Bible says: ‘Two are better than one if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.' When we're committed to someone, we're there when they're struggling, even if that means making a sacrifice. The Bible goes on to say: ‘A cord of three strands is not quickly broken' (Ecclesiastes 4:12 NIV). So when we're in a relationship, we not only need to be committed to each other, but also to God. When both people in a relationship are individually committed to God, and as a couple committed to Him too, then it strengthens the relationship. Commitment means that we don't just walk away when things get tough. It means that we try and work things out when we've disagreed. It means we do what we can for that person. And that can be really hard for us to do. But God's there to help us have greater levels of commitment. And that includes our commitment to Him too. The Bible says: ‘Come near to God and he will come near to you' (James 4:8 NIV). When we get closer to God, he gets closer to us, making our relationship with Him, and therefore with others, even stronger.

What Now?

If you're in a relationship, invite God to be part of it. Ask Him to create a cord of three strands in that relationship.

Exodus 19-20, Matthew 18:21-35
