A 5.5-carat triangular-cut diamond billed as the largest fancy vivid blue-green diamond known to exist sold for $17.3 million on Wednesday, Christie's said, calling it a record price for a stone of its kind sold at auction.

The "Ocean Dream," the standout offer at the auction house's Geneva sale of jewelry, was found in Central Africa in the 1990s. The price easily topped the presale estimate to fetch 7-10 million francs (around $9-13 million).

Artificial intelligence developers want to know what you know.

Leading makers of generative AI tools are hiring people with a wide range of skills and expertise, from Hollywood screenwriters to hiking enthusiasts, to train their bots to be smarter, according to job postings.

"They are some of the fastest-growing jobs out there," said Christine Cruzvergara, vice president of higher education and student success at Handshake, a hiring platform that connects people with different backgrounds and skills to leading AI labs.

New maps from NASA using nearly a decade's worth of data show how the use of artificial light has shifted over the years.

To make the maps, NASA researchers analyzed data collected by its "Black Marble" program, which uses a specialized sensor to capture low-light imagery of Earth at night. The data was collected by three different satellites between 2014 and 2022.

Researchers expected to find "a gradual increase in artificial light at night" over the years, NASA said in a news release. What they discovered was "much more nuanced...more

It's Bulgaria's first-ever Eurovision victory.

Trump Mobile says its phone will ship this week, almost a year after announcing the device

Trump Mobile said it is beginning to ship its gold-toned mobile phone, almost a year after the company first unveiled plans for the device.

"The T1 Phone has arrived!! Those who pre-ordered the T1 Phone will be receiving an update email. Phones start shipping this week!!!," the company said in a social media post on Wednesday.

The announcement comes amid delays in the $499 phone's rollout, which the company said last year had been pushed back because of the U.S. government shutdown. Consumers have also raised concerns after Trump Mobile updated its preorder terms in April to say that making a $100 deposit "does not guarantee that a device will be produced or made available for...more

Celtic needed the final minutes of the final day of the Scottish Premiership season to finally overtake Hearts in a 1?vs.?2 title decider and secure their fifth straight league title on Saturday with a 3-1 win – a crowning achievement, but not without controversy.

Hearts entered Saturday's game at Celtic Park with a one-point lead and seemed on course to maintain that lead with a goal from Lawrence Shankland in the 43rd minute. Just before the halftime break, though, Hearts' Alexandros Kyziridis conceded a penalty...more

For the third time in the past four years, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have lifted the FA Cup title. This time they defeated Chelsea 1-0. It wasn't a final for the ages in any sense of the term. The two teams combined for only five shots on target, but it's a fitting end to Chelsea's season, which is coming to a close with a whimper instead of a bang.

For a centerpiece of England's sporting calendar, there was nothing particularly thrilling about Manchester City's triumph over Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup final. For the standout number of world-class attacking talent on the pitch, the teams mustered a combined five shots on target and 1.16 expected goals, a single goal in the final 20 minutes the only real cause for celebration for any fans in attendance at London's Wembley Stadium. A British court sentenced a truck driver to prison for smuggling $9.4 million worth of cocaine in a shipment of underwear and clothing from Skims, Kim Kardashian's shapewear brand, authorities said Monday.

The National Crime Agency said Jakub Jan Konkel, 40, was driving a truck carrying 28 pallets of Skims clothing from the Netherlands when he was stopped by border officials at a port in Essex in September.

The agency said Konkel had stopped on the way to collect 90 kilograms (198 pounds) of cocaine, and that the truck had been specially adapted so that he could hide the drugs, wrapped in 1-kilogram (2.2-pound) packages, in a compartment of the truck's back...more

Pay for American workers is lagging inflation — again

Pay for American workers is lagging inflation — again

Roughly three-quarters of Americans say their incomes are lagging behind inflation, according to a CBS News poll.

Recent economic data attests to the dip in so-called real wages. In April, U.S. inflation rose at an annual rate of 3.8% from a year ago, while workers' paychecks grew 3.6% — the first time since 2023 that consumer prices have outpaced wage growth.

That sense of slipping backward, particularly driven by surging gasoline prices, is worsening the affordability challenges facing many people: 76% of survey respondents reported concern about their personal finances, CBS News found.

Some 64% also described the state of the economy as "very bad" or "fairly bad," according to the survey, which...more

Castro family is still central to Cuba's leadership. Here are the names to know.

In the months after U.S. forces removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power in a daring but relatively brief military operation, President Trump has openly intimated that something similar could soon take place in Cuba.

He has said "Cuba's going to be next" and mused about "taking Cuba in some form."

For decades, U.S. administrations have tried and failed to bring about major changes to Cuba's communist system, imposing sanctions but making little headway as its economy fell into ruins.

As living conditions in Cuba further worsen under a virtual oil blockade imposed by the Trump administration following Maduro's ouster, U.S. officials have been meeting with key...more

Which college majors offer the best long-term return on investment?

As college costs climb and skepticism about higher education grows, many Americans are asking whether a bachelor's degree is still worth the price.

A new analysis of Texas public college students shows that, long-term, they generally earn far more than those who never attended college, even in liberal arts.

The analysis, by the Postsecondary Commission, a nonprofit education group, tracked about 29,000 students who enrolled in bachelor's degree programs in the 2008-09 academic year. Researchers then tracked their "cumulative net value-added earnings" over the next 15 years.

LeBron James for a minimum salary? For most of his career, that seemed like a fantasy. With his 2026 free agency approaching, the concept seemed at least somewhat plausible. Though James is worth a good deal more, he is 41 and seemingly eager to contend for a championship. The sort of teams that are capable of doing so tend not to have much more available money than that to offer and, unlike his prior free agencies, he is likely too old at this point for teams to justify moving heaven and earth in order to create the money...more

Five Italians killed in a Maldives diving incident may have taken the wrong tunnel on their way out of an underwater cave, the head of the company that recovered their bodies said Thursday.

Finnish divers working for DAN Europe found the Italians in a corridor with a dead end inside the cave complex, which sits about 165 feet underwater, Italy's la Repubblica daily reported.

"There was no way out from there," the company's CEO Laura Marroni was quoted by la Repubblica as saying.

The Italian divers were identified as Monica Montefalcone, an associate ecology professor at the University of Genoa; her daughter Giorgia Sommacal; marine biologist Federico Gualtieri;...more

Little St. James in the Virgin Islands has attracted seekers lured by tales of Jeffrey Epstein's private island.

Epstein island trespasser says he was hog-tied, thrown into dungeon

Benjamin Owen landed in the Virgin Islands on April 24 with two other men. Their mission, Owen and his associate Ryan Dalton said, was to go to notorious sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein's former island, Little St. James.

The 44-year-old Memphis resident said that after arriving on the island the following day, he was hog-tied and thrown into a room he called a "dungeon," and blindfolded, until Virgin Islands police arrived and arrested him hours later.

"I don't believe I was supposed to leave that island alive," Owen told CBS News.

In just six weeks, court documents show...more

The players won't be the only ones looking to score when the World Cup kicks off on June 11 across 16 cities in three countries. Held this year in Canada, Mexico and the U.S., the quadrennial soccer tournament is expected to become one of the biggest gambling events of all time.

Bookies.com predicts Americans will wager $3.1 billion on World Cup games through online sports betting, which is legal in dozens of states. Prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket are projected to handle another $2.4 billion in bets, according to the forecast from the online sports betting site.

Why Google's Gemini Spark AI agent could be a game changer

Google's Gemini Spark AI tool could be a game-changer for consumers wading into the world of agentic AI, according to technology experts.

Google announced the new tool — the internet giant's answer to OpenClaw, the autonomous AI agent being hyped by tech enthusiasts and developers — this week during a rollout of new AI features that Google said can complete tasks for users.

"There is a paradigm shift happening right now where AI is going from a chat interface to actually being able to do things for you," Clarence Lee, a tech entrepreneur and visiting lecturer at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, told CBS News.

Lee compared an AI agent like Gemini Spark to a personal assistant to...more

New York has looked incredible since Game 4 of the first round... but this kind of run wouldn't be happening in the West

The Knicks might be on the best nine-game run in NBA history as they handle business in the weak East

The New York Knicks blasted the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night, 109-93, to take a 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. This is no great surprise. The Knicks are a better team than the Cavs in every area. The Cavaliers let Game 1 slip through their fingers by squandering a 22-point lead with seven minutes to play. The odds of them picking themselves off the mat after that kind of emotional gut punch and rallying back to win Game 2 were very low.

So the Knicks won the game, and they are probably...more

Roberta Walls. Virginia Beach Police Department

A Connecticut man was arrested for the decades-old rape and murder of a Virginia woman after forensic evidence offered new leads in the cold case, police said Wednesday.

The body of 22-year-old Roberta Walls was found in a field in Virginia Beach on the morning of May 15, 1986, the Virginia Beach Police Department said in a news release. The department described her as "a vibrant young woman" who "had a promising future ahead of her."

Walls had been sexually assaulted and stabbed multiple times. Police investigated the killing, but had no leads, according to the department. Eventually, it was assigned to the...more

Tennessee stops execution after failing to find inmate's vein for lethal drugs, attorney says

Tennessee halted the execution of death row inmate Tony Carruthers on Thursday, his attorney said, after the officers tasked with establishing an intravenous line through which to administer lethal drugs failed to do so for more than an hour.

"They tortured him," said the attorney Maria DeLiberato, in a text message that CBS News obtained through the American Civil Liberties Union. "When they tried to do the central line, they put a shot of lidocaine in his chest and he told them he could still feel the puncture and they did the puncture anyway."

In the text, DeLiberato said Carruthers, 57, was groaning and bleeding from his attempted injection sites. She said officers tried three times...more

At least three people watched a livestream as gunmen filmed themselves killing three people in Monday's attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego before their own deaths, according to a CBS News analysis of footage from the attack. One viewer urged another to alert law enforcement, but it is not clear if anyone did.

A recording of the attack later circulated online, including on so-called "gore websites" that have previously served as gathering places for admirers of mass shooters.

According to screen recordings reviewed by CBS News, the shooters were on a Signal video call with a user identified only as "Noelle" before and during the attack. The recordings show Noelle had been on the call...more

Malik Nabers' return uncertain: Should Giants be worried about Jaxson Dart's supporting cast?

The New York Giants are a trendy pick to be a lot better in 2026 than they were in 2025. Everybody liked the hiring of John Harbaugh to replace the departed Brian Daboll. Everybody agrees that they had a strong first round of the draft by taking Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa in the top 10. There are high hopes for the defense under Dennard Wilson despite the departure of Dexter Lawrence. And the offense has Jaxson Dart heading into Year 2 after a pretty successful rookie campaign.

This factor may determine whether you ever build wealth. You have no control over it.

Homeownership has long been seen as a cornerstone of the American Dream because it reliably builds wealth. But new research suggests your chances of ever acquiring a home may depend partly on something beyond your control: your parents' wealth.

To examine the factors that influence what economists refer to as "wealth mobility," researchers from the U.S. Census Bureau and Carnegie Mellon University analyzed IRS tax records, Census data and property ownership records for 3.4 million families.

The analysis then tracked the children born to those families — kids born between 1978 and 1986, or the youngest Gen Xers and youngest millennials — and whether they were able to buy a home...more

AI job cuts are rising, but experts say layoffs are only part of the story

AI-related layoff announcements are mounting, fueling the sense that the technology is already replacing a significant number of U.S. workers as companies invest heavily in automation. But AI's broader impact on workers may be quieter: weaker hiring, especially for junior and entry-level roles.

Enterprise software maker Intuit this week cut 17% of its staff, or 3,000 people, saying it would shift its focus to AI, while Meta began laying off 8,000 workers on Wednesday as it shifts investment toward AI. Last week, Cisco also announced thousands of job cuts, with CEO Chuck Robbins saying in a blog post that it was reducing headcount in part to invest in "employees' use of AI across the company."...more

Consumers are still spending, but cracks are starting to show

Consumer polls about the state of the U.S. economy suggest the mood is grim: Two-thirds of respondents to a recent CBS News poll reported feeling financially stressed, while a majority said soaring gasoline prices are causing hardship.

For now, however, such sentiments have yet to quash consumer spending, the critical flow of dollars that keeps the economy humming. What gives?

Walmart's latest financial results illustrate the pattern, with the world's largest retailer on Thursday reporting another quarter of strong sales growth. The company's low prices are drawing shoppers across the income spectrum who are spending more on essentials, particularly gas. Other retailers have also recently reported strong...more

How Iran could be outmaneuvering the U.S. in the online propaganda world

How Iran could be outmaneuvering the U.S. in the online propaganda world

As the war with Iran approaches the three-month mark, another battle is raging far from the front lines. An online propaganda war is currently being waged between the United States and Iran, and global reaction suggests the Iranians are beating the Americans at their own game.

Political satire and propaganda have been used as a weapon of war for decades. In 1940, the German army was invading and seizing one European country after another.

It would take more than slapstick Hollywood comedy to turn the tide, but Charlie Chaplin as an Adolf Hitler look-alike gave the world an insight into the power of mockery.

"The point with all political satire is to mock those in power....more

Drake Beats Michael Jackson’s Record for Most No. 1s by a Solo Male Artist as ‘Janice STFU’ Debuts Atop Singles Chart

Drake has broken the record previously held by Michael Jackson for most No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 by a solo male artist as “Janice STFU” bows atop the chart following the release of his trio of albums.

With that accomplishment, Drake now ties Rihanna and Taylor Swift for most No. 1s across all acts with 14 chart toppers. The only other artists ahead of them are Mariah Carey with 19 and the Beatles with 20.

Additionally, Drake beats Morgan Wallen’s record from 2025 for earning the most entries in a single week on the chart with 42 songs. Wallen previously lodged 37 song entries, breaking his...more

Behind the scenes at the AMAs: BTS brought the screams, Billy Idol brought the nostalgia and Karol G brought the heat

The loudest cheers belonged to artists at very different points in their careers — from returning global superstars to musicians discovering new audiences. And yes, my ears are still ringing from all the "BTS" chants.

Behind the scenes at the AMAs: BTS brought the screams, Billy Idol brought the nostalgia and Karol G brought the heat
Three artists. Three very different eras of music. One loud night inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

There are always two versions of an awards show: the one that airs on TV and the one that happens in the room.

At the American Music Awards on Monday night, the biggest moments weren’t always where producers intended. BTS turned commercial breaks into concert warm-ups. People who definitely...more

If the San Antonio Spurs aren't able to win two straight games in this Western Conference Finals that they now trail 3-2 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Victor Wembanyama is going to regret his Game 5 performance for a long time. This was the biggest game of his life and he laid an egg with 20 points and six rebounds on 4-of-15 shooting in a 127-114 loss. He only reached the 20-point mark because he piled up 12 free throws.

The six rebounds is inexcusable for Wembanyama, a skyscraper of a human being at 7-foot-4. The four buckets speak more to...more

Follow Arsenal to the northwest, the Midlands and even west London over the past few decades and there is one familiar refrain you will hear again and again. "Champions of Europe, you'll never sing that". Mikel Arteta's side can rock up at Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Chelsea; it doesn't matter how many points clear they might find themselves in the Premier League, they still won't have that European Cup that half a dozen of their rivals do.

Making mirth at Arsenal's European expense is not even...more

An albino buffalo nicknamed "Donald Trump" has been spared from sacrifice in a religious festival in Bangladesh. The animal has its familiar hairdo to thank, after images of its golden tuft went viral online.

It had been slated for traditional sacrifice as part of festivities for the Eid al-Adha holiday, which Muslims around the world are marking this week, and which often includes animal sacrifices in some places. Thanks to its perceived resemblance to President Trump, the rare albino buffalo will live on.

Treasury Department is weighing a $250 bill with Trump's image

The Treasury Department is considering issuing a $250 bill featuring President Trump, though any such banknote would require a change in federal law, an agency official told CBS News.

The bill's development, first reported by the Washington Post on Thursday, comes in response to legislation proposed last year by Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, the department said.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed the $250 bill at a White House press briefing on Thursday.

"For U.S. currency at present, no living person can be on U.S. currency, and the currency must say 'In God We Trust'," he said. "So right now, there is proposed legislation that is in front of the House, in front...more

5 economic signals suggest U.S. consumers are feeling the strain

5 economic signals suggest U.S. consumers are feeling the strain

For years, American consumers have defied predictions and kept the economy moving forward with their spending even amid a raft of financial pressures. Yet signs of financial strain are emerging as households grapple with the highest inflation rate in nearly three years.

Consumer spending drives about 70% of U.S. economic activity, raising concerns about a slowdown if Americans pull back amid an ongoing spike in energy prices.

"If gas prices stay elevated, middle-income families will likely face more tradeoffs. For most households, gas isn't optional — it's how they get to work, take care of their families and manage daily life," said Glenn Williams, CEO of Primerica, a provider of financial products....more

Data center frenzy is spurring a jobs boomlet for blue-collar workers

Exactly how artificial intelligence will shake up the U.S. job market won't be certain for years. In the short term, the rapid buildout of data centers powering the rise of artificial intelligence is creating a boomlet in blue-collar jobs even as some companies invest in AI and axe white-collar roles.

For now, most of the employment opportunities spawned by the installation of data centers are construction jobs, experts told CBS News, noting that such jobs are temporary.

Other job gains stemming from the ramp-up in data center construction will have a more limited impact, according to Ben Zweig, a labor economist and CEO of Revelio Labs, a provider of workforce intelligence.

Whatever the specifics for each player, there is one common theme that emerges. Whether you're fit to play or not, you are still a part of the team. That might sound obvious and unremarkable but it is not as commonplace as you...more

Why have tomato prices surged nearly 40% in a year?

Tomatoes are the latest popular food to take a bite out of consumer wallets, joining items like coffee, bananas and beef.

As of April, government data shows the fruit's prices were up nearly 40% from a year ago, compared with 17% for food costs overall. Across the U.S., tomatoes cost an average of $2.69 a pound, a record high, according to Federal Reserve figures.

By comparison, coffee prices in April had risen 18.5% from the trailing 12 months, ground beef had jumped 19% and seafood was up 12%, labor data shows.

Several factors are driving up tomato prices, David Branch, sector manager at the Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute, told CBS News. The U.S. in July imposed a 17% tariff on Mexican tomatoes after...more

One of Poland's strangest tourist attractions is back: The 666 bus to Hel is doomed no more, and rolling again.

In Christian tradition, 666 is known as the number of the beast, but the bus doesn't go to the underworld – it goes to Hel, a small resort town on Poland's Baltic coast.

For years, people took photos of themselves on the 666 to Hel and shared them on social media, relishing the coincidence of a bus to a beach resort provoking mental images of damnation, thanks to the similarity of the town's name to the English word hell.

The winding road of Odell Beckham Jr.'s career has led him to where it all began. Eight years after being traded out of the Big Apple, the veteran wide receiver has struck a reunion with the New York Giants, inking a deal with the team on Monday, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The team has since made the signing official.

This comes after a workout with the franchise earlier in the day and marked the second time this offseason that he worked out for the Giants. This time, it's resulted in him putting pen to paper on a contract that'll bring him back to...more

As the World Cup looms, Bosnia and Herzegovina's captain, Edin Dzeko, didn't even think that he'd be playing soccer right now, but after helping lead Schalke back to the Bundesliga, he'll also captain his nation in their first World Cup since 2014. Quite a lot has changed for the 40-year-old since he joined Schalke in January, but while he's not pondering the future at this time, it's been a ride that he wouldn't change after departing Fenerbahçe in Turkiye to return to Germany, where he broke out as a professional while with...more

Teenage girl accused of stabbing 3 horses during racing event in Las Vegas

A teenage girl has been arrested and charged for allegedly stabbing three horses during a racing event in Las Vegas, police said. None of the animals suffered life-threatening injuries.

The animals were stabbed early Saturday morning at a barn inside the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa's equestrian center, which was hosting a horse racing event over the weekend, CBS affiliate KLAS reported.

The incident happened after organizers of the event, called the 2026 NBHA Professional's Choice Vegas Super Show, announced Friday that someone scheduled to compete in the races had been removed from the competition, according to KLAS. Wilting in the summer sun, a line of tourists waits to climb Notre Dame cathedral and meet its gargoyles.

Four meters (13 feet) beneath them, a team of archaeologists is digging the other way - straight down and back in time, to Roman Paris 2,000 years ago.

In 2019, fire brought Notre Dame's spire crashing down as the world watched. The cathedral was rebuilt and reopened in late 2024, and now Paris wants to soften the hot, bare square in front of it with trees and shade.

Bear rampages through 2 factories and a residential area in Japan, injuring 4 people

A bear attack left four people injured in two factories and a residential area in northern Japan's Fukushima on Tuesday, police and media reports said.

A record 13 people were killed by bears in Japan last year, and there has been a jump in sightings as the animals emerge hungry from hibernation.

"A bear-related human injury incident... occurred in Fukushima City, injuring four people," the prefectural police said in a statement.

The bear was first spotted in a car parts factory, prompting an emergency call explaining that "employees had been bitten," the Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported, citing police and fire department officials. The outlet reported the bear still had...more

This is the main reason some college grads are struggling to find work — and it's not AI

Remote work, once seen largely as a pandemic-era perk, is hurting young workers' employment prospects, economists say.

Work-from-home arrangements account for 64% of the jump in unemployment among young college graduates since the pandemic, according to new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It's harder for managers to train and mentor young workers when they aren't physically in the same space, the study found.

"Accordingly, companies may be reluctant to hire less-experienced workers in distributed work arrangements," Fed research economist Natalia Emanual wrote in a blog post.

"Employers may not want to hire fresh graduates onto distributed teams...more

Northlake police warn of gas pump screw scam

Northlake police warn of gas pump screw scam

The Northlake Police Department issued a warning about a new scam at gas stations that is low tech, but effective.

Known as a "screw scam," Northlake police said scammers jam a small screw into the nozzle cradle of a gas pump. When you finish pumping gas and hang the nozzle up, the screw blocks the lever and prevents it from closing. Because of that, the pump thinks you're still fueling your car.

When you drive away, a thief waiting nearby pulls up and fills their own tank while it continues charging to the previous user's card.

Police said they first became aware of the scam on Friday, May 29, when videos began circulating on social media showing Sam's Club gas pumps with a screw blocking the lever from closing....more

How these surprisingly likable Knicks have mastered the art of the buddy comedy

The Knicks usually have plenty of people root against them ... but that might not be the case in their first NBA Finals since 1999

Before the Western Conference Finals were settled, the Knicks had a long layoff. While they were sitting around, Mike Brown was asked the usual question about which team he'd rather face, and he gave the usual answer about how it didn't matter -- with one important personal caveat.

"If we played San Antonio, it would save me some money because my family lives in San Antonio," Brown said. "I don't have to buy airline tickets."

Mike Brown says it doesn't matter who the Knicks will face in the NBA Finals but...

It was a good line, and he got some laughs. Like the team he coaches,...more

Cristiano Ronaldo and other 40-year-olds set to make 2026 World Cup the oldest ever

As Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Guilerrmo Ochoa gear up for their record sixth trip, it may seem like the 2026 World Cup is set to be the oldest in history, and that assessment would be correct. Ronaldo and Ochoa are set to accomplish this feat in their 40s, while Messi is only 38, which is quite young by the standards that this World Cup is about to set. In history, only seven players 40 or older have ever stepped on the pitch during a World Cup, and while Essam El Hadary's record of being the oldest player to feature at the World Cup in 2018 at 45 years, 161 days old, this tournament...more

Fugitive who stole identity of college grad who died in 1975 pleads guilty to fraud

A fugitive who stole a college graduate's identity and proceeded to use it for more than 40 years as a way to avoid arrest on an attempted murder charge has now pleaded guilty to fraud, among other charges, federal authorities said.

Stephen Craig Campbell, 73, took on the identity of an Arkansas man named Walter Lee Coffman, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Mexico, where Campbell was arrested last year. Coffman had recently graduated from the University of Arkansas with an engineering degree when he died in a car accident in 1975, at just 22, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Yeast has been growing in the guts of a frozen mummy called Oetzi the Iceman for thousands of years, scientists have discovered, telling AFP they used it to make a sourdough bread.

More than 5,300 years ago — before the Egyptian pyramids were built — Oetzi was strolling through the Alps on the border of Austria and Italy when he was killed by an arrow in the back.

He remained frozen in the ice until two German hikers stumbled across his mummified remains in 1991 in the northern Italian region of South Tyrol.

The job market is much stronger than economists expected. Why?

Against all odds, the U.S. job market is in a good place.

Employers added 172,000 jobs in May, blowing past analyst forecasts and sustaining the healthy pace of payroll gains from the two prior months. Average monthly job growth from March through May has tripled from roughly 63,000 a year ago to nearly 190,000 this spring.

The economy has faced one headwind after another over the past year: the highest tariffs in more than 70 years; the Iran war; a recurrence of the inflationary pressures that slammed Americans during the pandemic; persistent public pessimism, or "vibecession," as millions struggle with the cost of living; and immigration restrictions.

The U.S. is minting more millionaires than ever. Here's why.

The U.S. is minting more millionaires than ever. Here's why.

The U.S. minted 736,000 new millionaires last year, bringing the total number of Americans with such wealth to a record 8.7 million, according to a new report.

Millionaire wealth is measured by investable assets, excluding individuals' primary residences, collectibles, consumables and consumer durable goods, consulting firm Capgemini said in its World Wealth Report 2026, released Thursday. The number of U.S. millionaires is the highest since Capgemini started tracking wealth trends three decades ago, the company told CBS News.

The stock market was a primary driver of the surge in new millionaires, with the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rising about 18% and 21% last year, respectively....more

Virginia man sentenced to life in prison for double murder scheme in affair with au pair

A Virginia man who was having an affair with the family's Brazilian au pair was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for the murder of his wife and a man who was lured to the couple's home as a fall guy.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, claimed he shot Joseph Ryan after he came across Ryan attacking his wife on the morning of Feb. 24, 2023. But prosecutors said Brendan Banfield and au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães set Ryan up in a scheme to get rid of Christine Banfield, a pediatric intensive care nurse.

Judge Penney Azcarate called Banfield's actions evil and calculated.

"The disregard of the life of your wife, someone you supposedly...more

David Rush was charged with one count of stealing public money. Alexandria Sheriff's Office

A judge ordered the detention of an ex-CIA official found with gold bars worth about $40 million in his home last month.

In May, as FBI investigators were looking into whether Rush had lied about his educational and military background, they searched his home and discovered 303 gold bars, $2 million in cash and more than 30 luxury...more

A great white shark has been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea in what some divers believe to be the first underwater video of the species in the body of water. The Mediterranean is a known habitat of great whites, but sightings are extremely rare and usually happen near the surface.

Derk Remmers, a volunteer diver for the Ghost Diving organization, filmed the animal during a dive off the Strait of Sicily. He told CBS News' partner network BBC that "the shark was pretty close to us ... and in fact my fingers were...more

How to buy SpaceX shares as its blockbuster IPO readies for liftoff

SpaceX is set this week to launch as a publicly traded company, giving ordinary investors a chance to participate in what is expected to be the biggest initial public offering of all time.

While SpaceX will be held primarily by CEO Elon Musk, company employees and private investors, the Texas-based company will set aside a sizable chunk of stock to retail investors, which experts say is unusual. Earlier this year, Reuters reported that as much as 30% of the shares of the rocket and AI company will go to individual investors, three times the usual allocation.

SpaceX shares are scheduled to price on Thursday and begin trading the following day on the Nasdaq Composite Index under the ticker symbol "SPCX,"...more

OpenAI says it filed confidential IPO as it positions itself for AI arms race

OpenAI has filed a confidential initial public offering, the ChatGPT maker said Monday, bringing it one step closer to its official market debut.

"We recently submitted a confidential S-1. We expect it to leak so we're just announcing it," OpenAI said in a statement published Monday on its website. "We have not decided on timing yet; it may be a while because there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company. But it's a complicated set of tradeoffs, and this gives us the option to go public sooner if that ends up being best."

Going public will allow OpenAI, which is valued at $852 billion, to inject more cash into its business as the AI arms race heats...more

Workers say they like remote work. Research shows it hurts their mental health.

Americans routinely say they relish the ability to work from home or remotely rather than commute to an office. Yet new research suggests that untethering yourself can come at a cost.

New research from Federal Reserve Bank of New York economist Natalia Emanuel published in Science found that remote work, while often boosting productivity, also often leaves employees feeling socially isolated and leads to mental health issues.

To be sure, polls consistently show that workers enjoy remote work and are even willing to sacrifice pay for greater flexibility. Workers in remote arrangements also commonly report increased job satisfaction and better work-life balance. But the longer-term costs of...more

Nearly half of Americans say they're worse off financially than a year ago, NY Fed finds

The U.S. economy may be holding up better than expected, but Americans are growing more pessimistic about their personal finances.

Roughly 48% of Americans said their financial situation was worse in May than a year ago, the highest share since January 2023, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Survey of Consumer Expectations.

Consumers are also less optimistic about the future. The share of households expecting their finances to improve over the next year, relative to those expecting them to worsen, fell to its lowest level since October 2022, the New York Fed said.

The findings come amid an inflation spike driven by the Iran war, which has sent oil and...more

Can an AI agent cover for you while you're at the beach?

Summer means fun in the sun for employees on vacation, but it also often means more assignments to juggle for their coworkers back at the office. To compound the stress, those returning from time off frequently face a mountain of catch-up work, instantly undoing the good vibes.

Artificial intelligence can help, according to the management consulting firm Korn Ferry. The firm said some companies have started using AI agents, or custom bots, to lighten the summer scheduling load by handling basic correspondence, scheduling meetings and performing other administrative tasks while employees are on break.

For employers, that approach also helps them balance their business needs with ensuring that workers get the...more

For generations, young Americans have heard the same message: Go to college, get a job. But lately, young people are finding the job market to be terrible. It definitely hasn't been the case for Obetz, or for Olivia Bennett in New York, Michael Sundheim in Minneapolis, and Daniel Fischer in Anchorage. They've recently graduated, but trying to find a job has been slow and frustrating, despite sending in hundreds of applications.

When will the Iran war end? Here's what Trump has said.

From virtually the start of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran in February, President Trump has insisted it is almost over. And he's continued to give timelines ranging from a few days to a few weeks.

Fifteen weeks later — three times longer than his initial four-to-five-week estimate — ending the war has proven elusive. The president has at times shifted his language about the conflict, sometimes referring to it as an "excursion" rather than a war. After a sometimes shaky ceasefire was reached in April, Mr. Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested that the "war" phase — Operation Epic Fury — is over, despite intermittent attacks and the lack of an agreement to end Iran's...more

The retirement issue most Americans don't see coming: Spending their savings

Many Americans spend decades saving for retirement. But far fewer have a plan for the equally important task of spending that money once they stop working.

That financial challenge, known as "decumulation," refers to how retirees draw down their assets to fund their lifestyles while ensuring they don't run out of money. Only 31% of Americans know what the term means, according to new research from Corebridge Financial.

The lack of planning may contribute to a retirement paradox: Some retirees are so worried about outliving their savings that they spend far less than they can afford. A May report from the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that one-third of retirees still had 100% or...more
