Seattle Seahawks General Manager John Schneider surprised fans during a parade by tossing tiny Jesus figurines, highlighting his devout faith and a unique intersection of football and spirituality.



It’s common for parade riders to toss onlookers sugary treats – mints, lollipops and even chocolate if you’re fortunate. But Jesus figurines? That’s a lot less common.

That’s exactly what fans of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks saw Wednesday when general manager John Schneider tossed out countless tiny Jesus figures by the handful – dozens with each throw. The figurines came in different varieties, but they all carried the same simple message, “Jesus loves you,” with the word “loves” replaced by a heart on the sash.

As the general manager, Schneider oversees the construction of the team’s roster, including draft picks, trades and free agent signings. He’s also a devout Catholic on a team filled with men of faith.

Living in a football-crazed town while also being a churchgoer has led to some interesting interactions. In 2016, he shared a story about attending Mass and being asked about football.

“There’s this really nice little couple – not little, they’re much taller than I am – but they always talk to me and say, 'Hey, good luck with everything.’ We’re leaving Mass the other day, and he pats me on the back and is like, ‘Make sure you take care of that offensive line, huh?’ I was like, ‘I got you, brother. God bless you,’” Schneider recounted.

But not everyone recognizes him. In 2012, Schneider shared a humorous story about asking a priest for prayer before his first draft as general manager – a high-pressure task for anyone in that role.

“I’m the new general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, and I’m running my first draft,” Schneider recalled telling the priest, according to the Seattle Times. “I would like to pray for guidance and wisdom, would you be willing to say a prayer for me real quick?”

The two men bowed in prayer, with Schneider adding he was deeply moved by the priest’s words.

Afterward, the priest asked – clearly still not understanding who Schneider was – “Now tell me again. What do you do for the general manager?”

Schneider and his family are heavily involved in the Seattle community. He and his wife, Traci Schneider, founded the non-profit Ben’s Fund in 2012 in honor of their son, Ben, who was diagnosed with autism at a young age. The organization provides financial support and guidance for children and young adults on the autism spectrum.
