Ex-Olympic Swimmer Calls Out NCAA Over Lia Thomas Situation



Lia Thomas made history last Friday when she became the first transgender woman to win the NCAA Division I national title in the 500-yard freestyle.

In the days since, a mass debate has formed regarding whether or not Thomas should have been allowed to compete at all.

Ex-Olympic swimmer Felipe Delgado believes the NCAA should have adopted USA Swimming's policies instead of forming its own policies on transgender collegiate athletes.

"I think it's important to state here that there was an opportunity for the NCAA to adopt more strict policies in inclusion of trans athletes, and they could've done that in February, but it seems as though they chose not to, or they chose to avoid litigation by changing their stance halfway through the season and causing bigger problems for themselves," Delgado told Steve Doocy, host of Fox & Friends, on Monday, via Fox News.

"I think that, had they adopted USA Swimming's policies which are more strict than their own, we could have avoided a lot of the controversy that took place over the weekend and you and I could be sitting here talking about and celebrating the accomplishments by these incredible athletes."

The Lia Thomas situation has garnered all sorts of opinions. And her dominance in women's swimming has been well documented.

However, it's not like Thomas has blown away the competition in every possible race. The Penn swimmer only won the title in the 500 meter freestyle. She finished 8th in the 100 free last Friday.

Thomas' NCAA career, meanwhile, has come to an end.
