Taylor Swift crashes Dakota Johnson's 'SNL' monologue as her 'literal therapist,' then brings out a birthday cake

Swift joined her friend and "Patient Zero" co-star on Johnson's third night hosting "Saturday Night Live," while the cold open skewered Republicans a month before the midterms.

Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance on "Saturday Night Live" Saturday, walking into Dakota Johnson's monologue to set the record straight: she is not Johnson's therapist.

Johnson, hosting for the third time after stints in 2015 and January 2024, opened by noting her birthday would begin at midnight. "I'm doing what I always do on my birthday, which is stand in Midtown in a tight-ass latex dress looking for attention," she said.

She also took a shot at her 2024 superhero flop. "The last time I was here, I was promoting a movie called 'Madame Web,'" Johnson said. "And tonight, I'm still promoting it because the movie hasn't made any money yet."

Since she last hosted, Johnson said, she had gone through "two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians." Variety noted the line referred to Coldplay's Chris Martin and the singer Role Model.

Insisting she wouldn't talk about her personal life, Johnson pivoted to her new movie, "Verity," calling it "a psychosexual erotic thriller. And you know what? So is dating musicians. Some of them don't wear shoes. Some of them are terrible in bed. But all of them are in my DMs."

"Some people leave concerts with merch, and I leave concerts with a two-and-a-half-year relationship," she said. "But I have really good friends. They don't judge me for dating these men."

She then introduced "my literal therapist," and Swift walked out to screams from the Studio 8H crowd.

"I'm not your therapist, actually," Swift said. "You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some."

"Yeah, well, I have manners," Johnson shot back.

Swift said Johnson flops on her couch and overshares while Swift occasionally replies, "Damn, that's crazy." When Swift says it's getting late, Johnson answers, "Sleepover, yay!" Instead, Swift said, "I give you a Pedialyte, and my security drives you home."

Johnson also slipped in a nod to Swift's husband, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who grew up in the Cleveland area. Dating musicians, she joked, was "a public service" because "ladies, I am saving you a lot of money on Zoloft. So you're welcome, America, and also England and parts of Ireland and Cleveland."

Swift released a song called "Cleveland!" on her new EP last week.

A birthday surprise
During the goodnights at the end of the show, Swift brought out a blue-and-white cake for Johnson, who turned 37 on Sunday.

The cameo came a week after Johnson co-starred with Colin Farrell in Swift's "Patient Zero" music video, which premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards. Swift released an expanded eight-minute version of the video on Apple Music on Saturday, according to Billboard.

Fans had seen the appearance coming. During Swift's cameo in a "Law & Order: SVU" sketch at the Emmys last month, what looked like a "Saturday Night Live" emblem was pinned to a bulletin board behind her.

"Verity," a Colleen Hoover thriller co-starring Anne Hathaway, led the box office this weekend with an estimated $33.6 million, according to Deadline.

A midterm cold open
The episode opened at Republican National Committee headquarters, where two strategists, played by Andrew Dismukes and Ashley Padilla, tried to film campaign ads because "the midterm polling is looking bleak."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio (Marcello Hernández) asked to be called "Little Marco," then recorded a message to Spanish-speaking voters that Rolling Stone translated as "Oh my God, he tricked us! And he tricked me too!"

Vice President JD Vance (Jeremy Culhane) was sent into the hall to fetch the next guest and came back wheeling in Sen. Mitch McConnell (Mikey Day), who managed a slow peace sign and said "Live from New York" too early. Vance then pitched himself anyway: "Hey, in two years I might be president." His ad was cut off after "Hi, I'm JD Vance."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth (Colin Jost) arrived chugging what he called Spider-Man's non-alcoholic beer. "I need all you patriots at home to do the gayest thing ever and vote," he said. "Thanks to me, the military finally has its priorities and sexuality straight." He then performed slam poetry with bongos.

President Trump (James Austin Johnson) closed it out. "I'm President Trump, and I approve this ramble," he said, before turning to his promise of $5,000 checks if Republicans win: "That is not a bribe because I have no intention of following through on that promise."

He also urged viewers to back "creepy Ken Paxton down there in Texas," the Republican Senate nominee, adding, "It's his eye. Hate that eye."

Asked to record a victory message in case Republicans win and another in case they lose, Trump gave the same line both times: "We did it. We won."

The rest of the show
Other sketches included "Mean, Scary Girlfriend," "Guns for Women" and "Hospital Gossip," according to NBC. Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile was the musical guest and performed twice.

Shane Gillis hosts next week, Oct. 10, with musical guest Rosalía.
