Jean-Pierre Adams, former soccer player, dies after 39-year long coma

Jean-Pierre Adams, a former French soccer player, has died after being stuck in a coma for 39 years.

The former player passed away on Monday, nearly four decades after several mistakes at a hospital caused him to suffer a cardiac arrest and brain damage, BBC Sport reported.

Adams played for the Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice and the Paris Saint-Germain soccer teams during his career. Both teams tweeted their condolences for Adams's death, with Nice saying they would pay tribute to Adams before their next game on Sept. 19.

Adams went to the Lyon hospital in March 1982 to undergo knee surgery, but many staff members were on strike during his visit. Only one anesthetist and one trainee were watching over Adams and seven other patients.

Neither the anesthetist nor the trainee were disciplined until over a decade later when they were suspended for one month and given a 750 euro fine. Bernadette Adams, Jean-Pierre Adams's wife, said the hospital never apologized for the accident.

Adams was discharged from the hospital after 15 months, leading to his wife taking care of him for the next 38 years.
