Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati respectively won the men's and women's Ballon d'Or awards on Monday in Paris, each of them making their own history in the process.
Dembele's triumph was the headlining act of a successful night for PSG, with two other members of their UEFA Champions League-winning team taking home individual honors and the club winning the Men's Club of the Year award. Dembele had emerged as the oddsmakers' favorite for the Ballon d'Or weeks before the ceremony but when he accepted his award, it was essentially a celebration of the surprise route he had taken to the stage. The forward has been a supporting character at the elite levels of the game for much of his career but was one of the stars in PSG's historic season, scoring 35 goals in all competitions during their treble-winning campaign.
Bonmati, meanwhile, won the Ballon d'Or for the third year in a row despite Barcelona's loss in the UEFA Women's Champions League final and Span's defeat in the Women's Euro final. She is the first woman to win three Ballon d'Or trophies in a row and is just the third player ever to do so, with Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Michel Platini previously doing so.
