Joshua (2)—Obedience to the Word

To the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke, saying, “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you” … So they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you.”
Joshua 1:12–13, 16–17

Joshua (2)—Obedience to the Word
Moses had died. Thirty days of mourning for him had ended. God had commissioned Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land. He had promised to be with him and to give him victory over all the enemies he would encounter. He had also emphasized to him the importance of keeping the Law that Moses had commanded them and of not turning from it to the right or to the left.

Joshua now prepared the people to pass over the Jordan and take possession of the land. He had a special word for the two and a half tribes that had asked to be given their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan. Moses had told them that their warriors were to help their brethren of the other tribes conquer the land of Canaan and were then to be free to go back to enjoy their possession.

“Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you,” he told them. How important, too, it is for us to remember the words our blessed Lord has spoken to us! “Believe also in Me.” “Abide in Me.” “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” “Do this in remembrance of Me.” “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” “Love one another as I have loved you.” “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

Their immediate reply was that they would do all that he had commanded them. They would obey him as they had obeyed Moses. How well had they done this?! We too are often far more ready to promise than to yield obedience! May God help us not only to promise to follow and obey Him, but to do so day by day!

OFFENDED IN CHRIST?

The Christian race must be run with lots of patience or else it will be bungled midway. If you are inpatient with Gods timing, you will not only get into trouble but may not be able to finish the race. A good number of backsliders derailed from their heavenly track because of impatience. In Matthew 11:6 Jesus...More

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And...

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.

The spiritual elevation of Abraham in Genesis 18 and 19 is something very peculiar. He seems...More

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More
