The Attributes of God (1)
What a precious promise from God's Word! But who is this God that we are to wait upon? What is He like? We must confess that we know very little about our God, and what we do know we tend to isolate because of our circumstances. We might know and understand that God is love, but when bad things happen because we live in a world broken by sin, we might begin to think that God has abandoned us, or we might wonder why He allowed that accident or why He did not stop something from happening. It is so easy for us to isolate certain characteristics of God to serve our own purposes.

We call these characteristics attributes of God. An attribute of God is that which is true of Him, which He has revealed to us in His Word. There are unshared attributes of God, meaning they are His alone; and there are shared attributes of God, meaning that He desires these to be seen in us as well. I believe that there are more attributes of God than any of us can count because God is infinite! Here are some attributes of God found in Isaiah 40:

He is self-sufficient (vv. 12-14), meaning that He stands alone and needs no one to help Him. He is omnipotent (v. 12), meaning that He is all-powerful. He is omniscient (vv. 13-14, 28), meaning that He is all-knowing. He is just (v. 14), meaning that He always does what is right. He is wisdom (v. 14), meaning that wisdom begins and ends with Him. He is sovereign (vv. 15-17), meaning that everything is under His control, and nothing takes Him by surprise. He is incomparable (v. 18), meaning that nothing and no one can compare with Him!
