Jesus, wearied from His journey

Jesus,...being wearied from his journey, sat by the well.

Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

John 4:6; Matthew 11:28.

Jesus, wearied from His journey
Feeling tired, Jesus sat down by a well. Such fatigue indicates clearly that the Lord Jesus was truly Man. He devoted Himself physically to the service of others. He had to go through Samaria on foot, became tired and sat down. Nevertheless He was God! When Satan tempted Jesus, He quoted the Bible: "He shall give his angels charge over you. They shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone" (Matthew 4:6; Psalm 90:11.12). That was perfectly true! Jesus could have used His power to spare Himself that tiredness. But all the gospels reveal that He was prepared to undergo heat, fatigue, hunger and thirst.

Moreover, no-one can imagine the weight of the moral burden He had to bear all His life on earth, when nobody really understood Him. He constantly read the wickedness and egotism in the hearts of those who surrounded Him, and had before Him the moment, when, on the cross, He was to bear all our sins as though they were His own.

Jesus humbled Himself to become a Man. He suffered on earth; in the measure in which He enters into our distress and understands the labourer burdened with a crushing task, or the invalid suffering physically, He is the One whose spirit is downcast and depressed.

"In that he himself has suffered, being tempted, he is able to aid those who are tempted" (Hebrews 2:18).

Today's reading: Exodus 28:1-14 · Luke 11:14-28

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
