Thoughts on the Gospel of John (97)

She (Martha) said to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world. And when she had said these things, she went away and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, The teacher has come and is calling for you. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met him. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She is going to the tomb to weep there.
John 11:27-31.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (97)
In her conversation with the Lord Jesus Martha heard a tremendous statement about the resurrection and life. It clearly overtaxed her understanding, for she evaded a direct answer by referring to the Old Testament that states that the Christ is the Son of God. She at any rate accepted Jesus as the promised Christ. Having failed to grasp the Lord's explanation of resurrection and life, she withdrew to call her sister.

Haven't we experienced something similar? When we encounter difficulties reading the Bible or hearing a sermon, we think of others who have spent hours learning and understanding biblical truths. The extent of our knowledge obviously differs, but sometimes our failure to understand God's thoughts is due to our reading the Bible too little or too superficially.

Mary wept. This is not said of Martha. Mary was apparently more sensitive than her sister. But the Lord Jesus loved them both, Martha as well as Mary.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Leviticus 22:1-33 · Psalms 68:20-27

ACCEPTED TIME 2

God is never too early and He is never too late. His timetable is set on purpose; the purpose is not only for your sake but also for His. In all things, His name shall be glorified. No doubt, He would have been glorified healing Lazarus of his sickness, but this can't compare to raising him from the dead after four...More

IMPEDIMENTS TO PRAYER

. He is looking for those who are ready and committed to walking in His footsteps. God is holy, and He has called us to holy living. We are to do as He commands because we are the light of the world. God in Heaven is glorified when our light shines in the midst of the darkness of this world. If you...More

Standing in the limelight

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern for all who are going to believe on him for everlasting life.
1 Timothy 1:15.16.
