It is the coffee break in a big...

When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which he has given you. Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God.
Deuteronomy 8:10.11.

It is the coffee break in a big factory. The staff help themselves at the counter in the canteen or unpack the rolls and drinks they themselves have brought. Some read the newspaper, others chat about the latest news in sport or politics. The room is full of the babble of voices. Here and there laughter can be heard. It is a welcome break.

Only one person bows his head before eating to collect his thoughts and thank God, his Creator, silently for the food. Amazed looks come from all round. One or other grins contemptuously. A believer giving thanks seems out of place there.

Who considers nowadays where "our daily bread" actually comes from? Didn't we earn it ourselves?

From time to time there is a drastic increase in the price of food, partly in crises, partly worldwide. Scientists and politicians therefore warn us about worldwide unease. Isn't that reason enough

to think about our dependence on God and His goodness as His creatures?

to thank Him for all the good things that He grants us?

to treat all food with respect, so that nothing is wasted (cf. John 6:12)?

To assist those who suffer from poverty and starvation (cf. 2 Corinthians 9:6-9, Galatians 6:10)?

"Give me neither poverty nor riches - feed me with the food allotted to me; lest I be full and deny you, and say, Who is the LORD? Or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God" (Proverbs 30:8.9).

Today's reading: Joshua 10:28-43 · 1 Corinthians 9:16-27

. He learned that God can only use subjection of Himself, weakness in self, and dependence upon Him only.
However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
