Christian marriage – an obligation

Oh, that you had heeded my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
Isaiah 48:18.

Christian marriage - an obligation
These words were addressed to the people of Israel by the Holy Spirit, but they apply equally to Christian marriage. Why is an atmosphere of peace and faithfulness lacking in many marriages today? Today's verse gives us the answer: peace, faithfulness and righteousness go together. Peace is destroyed if faithfulness is disregarded, and faithfulness suffers when quarrelling and disharmony are predominant.

God has given us clear instructions regarding marriage. Men of God have written good books on the subject that is also dealt with in easily understandable sermons. Yet the number of broken marriages is increasing incessantly, even among those who profess to be true Christians. Why is that so? The answer is simple: God's instruction on marriage is not taken seriously enough. Many couples strive to attain worldly aims, others neglect reading the Word of God. Isn't it inevitable then that they discover that they have built their house on sand?

Every Christian marriage must rest on four pillars: their mutual obligation, their love and respect for each other and the lordship of Christ. Their obligation involves unconditional observance of the bond of marriage made before God. It is not a mere piece of paper. Believers know that they must fulfil promises made before God. God is holy, and marriage was instituted by God.

The Lord Jesus Himself said, "The two shall become one flesh. What God has joined together, let not man separate." (Matthew 19:5.6).

Today's reading: Judges 18:1-31 · Psalms 74:13-23
