November 14, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 21:1-16 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Romans 8:18 I was walking up and down the parking area outside the doctor's surgery, waiting for my wife. Suddenly, an elderly man, who was going to his car with great difficulty asked me, "Why are you going backwards and forwards like that?" "I could stand still," I replied, "but the exercise does me good. And I have just thanked God that I can move about so well." - "Yes," he continued, "I'm hardly able to walk now; it's a great effort to take a few steps." He then told me about his troubled life and his bitter memories of the war. He blamed God for allowing all that. And he would hear nothing of the Name of Jesus Christ. He thought that all that remained of him was the grace and corruption or cremation. Then all would be over for him. I tried to explain God's view of things and pointed out how short our life really is, how brief our problems and sufferings are, compared with eternity to come. Our merciful Creator granted us life in this world so that we might prepare for eternity. By faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sinful, we should take hold of eternal life, so that we take the pathway to future glory, of which today's verse from the Bible speaks. The elderly man continued accusing God for the misery that human beings have in fact caused. Will he misuse the time God patiently still grants him on earth, or will he turn to God in time? |
