The message of the cross

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18

The message of the cross
About 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ was nailed like a criminal to a wooden cross outside the city of Jerusalem. Although He had helped many in His life and had harmed no one, He was rejected and cast out. People’s response to His love was the cross.

As Jesus hung on the cross it suddenly became dark. For three hours no man could see Him. There He suffered for the guilt of others in divine judgment. Then He laid down His life to complete the work of redemption for lost sinners. His response to man’s hatred was love unto death.

Since His resurrection and ascension, the message of the cross has been proclaimed. It speaks of man’s guilt and of God’s forgiving love.

We have all sinned against God and have done many things that displease Him. It is impossible for us to right this wrong. This impossible debt before God must be paid by another – someone who is Himself innocent. This is exactly what Jesus Christ did on the cross for everyone who believes in Him.

How incomprehensibly great is the love of the Son of God! He suffered on the cross and gave His life to save us from eternal damnation. In faith we may personally claim that He bore the punishment for our sins in our place. Then God declares us free from all guilt.

Today’s reading: Genesis 9:1-29 · 1 Peter 5:1-7

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
