Below and behind

If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.

He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much.

Mark 9:35; Luke 16:10

Below and behind
Nobody likes to stand at the back of the queue at the supermarket checkout or at the ski lift. Rarely does anyone enjoy doing the simple tasks in a company. Our natural heart always strives to be above and in front.

But if we want to be disciples of the Lord Jesus, we can learn from Him to take a step back and do something that no one likes to do. He teaches us by His example to give up something in order to be of service to our fellow human beings.

The Lord Jesus has set us an example of humility and self-denial. In order to help us, He gave up everything, made Himself nothing, and took the last place on earth.

Once a rich young man came to Him with the question, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” The Lord Jesus answered him, “Sell all that you have” (Luke 18:18, 22). He had the authority to tell him this because He Himself would do the same and give His life on the cross. He literally sold everything He had.

Adopting such an attitude isn’t easy. But the Holy Spirit and the new life within us want to lead us to imitate the Lord Jesus. It will be a blessing to those around us if we humbly and faithfully fill the place assigned by the Lord. John the Baptist is an example to us when he said,

“He must increase, but I must decrease”. John 3:30

Today’s reading: Isaiah 19:1-25 · Acts 26:19-32

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
