Good times and bad times

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: surely God has appointed the one as well as the other.
Ecclesiastes 7:14

Good times and bad times
In days of prosperity we should be in good spirits. We shouldn’t then brood about what it would be like to lose what we are enjoying.

Job, however, who had experienced many blessed days, did just that. After tremendous difficulties had come into his life, he looked back on the good times and said, “For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, for trouble comes” (Job 3:25–26). When things were going well for Job, he burdened himself with restless thoughts. He was afraid that great terror might strike him. We shouldn’t imitate him in this regard.

But when days of calamity befall us, we should remember that even this time comes from God. Instead of mourning the good old days, let us accept from God what He has sent into our lives.

In this, Job is a good example for us. After losing his possessions, his children and his health, his trust in God shone brightly. He said to his embittered wife, “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” (Job 2:10). Job was aware that God not only brings about the good days but also sends the hard times. Thus, in his great distress, he looked confidently to his God.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 45:1-13 · Hebrews 9:11-18

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
