The one Mediator

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all.
1 Timothy 2:5–6

The one Mediator
There is only one Mediator between God and mankind, only one who could bridge the gap that separated the two sides.

The image of a bridge explains very well what it’s all about. On one side stands God, the Creator, and on the other side stand all human beings. Between God and us lies a deep chasm of separation. It exists because we have disregarded God’s standards and so our sins separate us from God.

No one can make his own way to God; no one can undo or remove his own sins. How then is a connection between “both sides” – between God and man – possible? God Himself has built the bridge for this. He gave His Son to become the man Christ Jesus and to die for us on the cross. Thus He became the bridge to God for us.

Through Jesus’ sacrificial death, everyone has the opportunity to turn to God and receive forgiveness of their sins. Everyone can use the bridge and come to God. Everyone is called to accept this offer.

Jesus Christ is therefore the one Mediator between God and mankind. Those who know the Son of God as their Saviour and Lord can approach God without fear, to praise and honour Him and to present their requests to Him.

Because Jesus is the Mediator, “the great High Priest” for believers, they can “come boldly to the throne of grace” to receive mercy and grace from God for all circumstances of their lives (Hebrews 4:14–16).

Today’s reading: Isaiah 57:1-21 · Mark 1:1-8
