Crooked rivers

The way of a guilty man is perverse; but as for the pure, his work is right.
Proverbs 21:8

Crooked rivers
A boy gazes thoughtfully at a map. After a while, he asks his mother, “Why are all the rivers so crooked?” The answer is simple: “They wind through the landscape because they always follow the path of least resistance.” The path of our life sometimes takes a crooked course. It isn’t pre-planned. But it happens because we lack the courage to keep it straight:

o Instead of confessing a committed sin, we go to great lengths to cover it up. No wonder we deviate onto crooked paths.

o We don’t speak the truth because we fear negative consequences. Instead, we resort to a lie and entangle ourselves in contradictions.

o It’s easier to stay in bed a little longer in the morning than to take time for Bible reading and prayer. But then we lack the strength for a life with God.

o Instead of boldly professing the Lord Jesus, we wind our way through and compromise, so as not to stand out as a Christian or be ridiculed.

o We try to avoid all difficulties on the path of faith. As a result, we don’t learn to trust the Lord.

If these examples are not unfamiliar to us, we can ask ourselves: How is it possible to walk the straight path of faith as a Christian? It is only possible if we fix our gaze firmly on the Lord Jesus and rely entirely on Him.

Today’s reading: Leviticus 6:1-30 · Psalms 52:1-9

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
