From darkness to light (1)

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
Psalm 40:2

From darkness to light (1)
Admittedly, the above phrases, "horrible pit" and "miry clay" are figurative language. Have they any meaning for people in the 21st century? Indeed, they have!
At the start of my life, I was in neither a horrible pit nor in miry clay. That came later. At first, everything was in order. I grew up in a normal family with greater and smaller joys and problems. It was family that, alongside work, placed much importance on celebrating.
Even religious matters had their place - that was my grandmother's doing. She often told stories of Jesus, who came from heaven to save people and cure their illnesses. As a boy, I liked to hear those stories of Jesus, especially the one about Peter walking on the water, then sinking and being rescued by Jesus' strong hands. Religious things didn't fall short: church-going, he church choir, playing in the band. That all went on until I was about 14.
Then came a time when I had other interests. Sometimes the sermons impressed me deeply, but the pleasures of the world proved a strong attraction. So I gradually laid aside the beneficial influence, like worn out clothes, and went for anything for which God has a suitable word: sin. In short, alcohol, late night parties, girls, and resistance toward anything that belonged to a civilised social system, getting entangled in pseudo-Marxism.
(to be continued tomorrow)
Today's reading: Ezekiel ch. 42

FALSE PROPHETS AND THEIR PROPHECIES-FOOLISH PROPHETS

The word of Jehovah came unto me, saying: Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say unto them that prophesy out of their own heart, Hear ye the word of Jehovah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow after their own spirit, and have seen nothing!...More

EVERYONE NEEDS A MIRACLE

Some years ago, I was invited to be the guest speaker at a garden party in an exclusive, highbrow residential area. Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More

FOR CHRIST'S SAKE DON'T!

A negative change is generally abhorred by men. Everyone craves progress. We always desire to keep ascending the ladder of success. No one wants to make a u-turn in the journey of greatness. The greatest journey whose end has the greatest significance is the journey to Heaven. This journey is only made in Jesus...More
