“All the days of my life”

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
Psalm 27:4

"All the days of my life" - didn't David aim rather high with this objective? But should we today, with all the privileges that we enjoy in this age of grace, be satisfied with anything less?
David had requested of God that he might "dwell in the house of the LORD" for the rest of his life, and then intended to strive after this wish with all its consequences. God's presence was important to him. So David wished to be where he could enjoy fellowship with Him.
If this is our desire, too, the rest of David's wishes will also be important for us:
"To behold beauty of the LORD", i.e. to be able to contemplate His exceedingly great glory and beauty.
"To inquire in his temple", i.e. in this way to seek a better acquaintance of Him.
Everyone should first entertain these wishes for himself; then we can join with those "who have obtained like precious faith with us" (2 Peter 1:1), when we contemplate the Lord in worship together every Sunday. And we can "inquire" after Him when the Word of God is preached and expounded "as the oracles of God" (1 Peter 4:11) and moves our hearts.
What a spur we sense when our hearts strive to contemplate the Lord in His beauty and glory and to learn more of Him and His ways!
Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 4

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
