Christ the Saviour (1)

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Zechariah 9:9

Christ the Saviour (1)
Whoever speaks of saving and a saviour, presumes an emergency that demands help and freedom from trouble. Sin has indeed caused mankind a multitude of troubles: illness, enmity, death and eternal condemnation.
The question where help for mankind can come from has always been asked. David, the writer of many psalms and the king of Israel, knew the answer. In his youth he had often suffered affliction and persecution, but at all times he experienced God's deliverance.
In many psalms, David praises God as the Saviour: "The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them and deliver them. He shall deliver them from the wicked and deliver them. He shall deliver them from the wicked and save them, because they trust in him" (Psalm 37:39-40).
God has frequently used individuals to help His people when in a troublesome situation. In the final instance, however, He was Himself the Saviour: "I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt, and you shall know no God but me; for there is no Saviour beside me" (Hosea 13:4).
Most deliverances that God granted His people in the Old Testament times were primarily from earthly trials. For salvation from sins, i.e. for the eternal salvation of the lost, the Son of God has to come to earth. His coming as Saviour was announced by the prophet Zechariah, as we have read in our opening verse.
(to be continued tomorrow)
Today's reading: Acts 3
