Some friends were undertaking a strenuous tour with a mountain guide in high Alpine regions. During their descent, they noticed two climbers without a guide. When they stopped for a short rest, they were overtaken by the couple and saw that they were off the beaten track, taking a course, that appeared shorter, but one that led over a glacier with numerous crevasses.
Suddenly, the friends heard a cry and saw one of the men stretched out on the snow directly next to a crevasse. Seeing what had happened, they rushed to their aid. The other climber, whom they could not see, had obviously jumped over one crevasse, only to fall into another that he had overlooked. Through his body weight, he was pulling the other climber at the other end of the rope nearer and nearer the danger. The mountain guide rushed across and freed them both from the perilous situation.
People's lives resemble a pathway over crevasses. How necessary a good guide is! Some want to make their own way, imagining a guide to be superfluous. However, even if we succeed in overcoming the many obstacles, death finally comes as the final "crevasse", sealing man's fate eternally.
How good it is that God has given us a reliable guide in Jesus Christ! Everyone who has entrusted himself to His leading will be brought safely through all the difficulties of life, including, even death!
